What is the need for a data transmission test?
Ans.The test is intended to ensure that E-Return intermediaries who file returns online use the XML files that confirm to the schema published by the IT Department and to ensure that the necessary infrastructure to facilitate online filing is available.

Where can I find schema (data structure) in which the IT return of eligible person can be uploaded?
Ans.The schema is available on NSDL’s site as well as on ITD’s site.

What is the need for an XML schema in the online filing process?
Ans.The XML schema published by the department contains definitions and data types of the information to be furnished in the various form types. The schema confirms to standards specified by the W3C consortium.

How I can conduct Data Transmission Test?
Ans.After completion of registration process temporary User-Id and Password will be allotted to you by NSDL, using which you are required to login to the Income Tax Department’s web-site and conduct data transmission test.

How will I as an applicant know the results of the Data Transmission test?
Ans.The applicant will be informed of the results online by the Income Tax Department.

Will I have to apply once for all the branches or separately for each branch across the country?
Ans.e-Return Intermediary role and responsibilities are described in the 'Electronic Furnishing of Return of Income Scheme, 2004'

The Electronic Furnishing of Return of Income Scheme, 2004 is applicable to only 60 cities. Whether eligible entity of any other city can apply for becoming e-Return Intermediary?
Ans.Yes, e-Return Intermediary can be from any city, but it can accept and upload IT returns of those eligible persons who are assessed or assessable to tax at any of the specified 60 cities.

How much time would it take for registration?
Ans.You will receive confirmation of your submission of application immediately. On realisation of payment and submission of requisite documents, NSDL will verify those documents within next two working days. If the documents are in order, temporary user id and password will be sent to you, with which you can conduct data transmission test with ITD. Once, you successfully pass data transmission test, you will be allotted ERIIN (e-Return Intermediary Identification Number) by e-Administrator

Whom do I contact if I encounter any problem during Data Transmission Test (DTT) ?
Ans.In case you face any problem during Data Transmission Test or even after registering as E-Return Intermediary, please contact e-filing administrator at efiling.administrator@incometaxindia.gov.in

Is there any last date for registration?
Ans.There is no last date for submitting application for becoming an e-Return Intermediary.

How can I change the details associated with my e-Return Intermediary registration?
Ans.The change / correction / updation facility over the net along with e-Return Intermediary registration facility will be available in a short time.

  1. The entity must have Digital Signature Certificate (Class II or Class III) from any of the licensed Certifying Authorities specified by NSDL for the purpose of digitally signing the application and the returns uploaded online.
    The digital certificate must be in the name of the applicant. If the digital certificate is in the name of an employee/partner of the applicant, then an authorisation letter by the applicant should be provided on the letterhead of the applicant to NSDL.
  2. Hardware
    • Intel Pentium IV or above
    • 256 MB RAM
    • UPS power backup for minimum 30 minutes
    • A screen resolution of 800 x 600 pixels and display of 256 colours
    • CD writer/ other backup devices like DAT drive
    • 20 GB free hard disc space exclusive for ITD
  3. Software Requirements
    • Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0 Server/ Workstation or Windows 2000
    • Professional/ Server/ Advanced Server or Windows XP
    • Anti-virus (Macfee or Symantec)
    • Internet Explorer 6.0 or above/ Netscape 5.0 or above
  4. Internet Connectivity
    • Dialup connection 56.6 kbps or above/ ISDN/ Leased Line
  5. The system used to log-on to the computer system of the ITD:
    • should have no resident/ running programs (other than what is allowed by ITD) ;
    • should have in place security procedure to ensure that there is no misuse.
  6. The entity should have necessary archival, retrieval and security policy for the e-returns that are filed through him.
  7. The entity should submit a due diligence certificate from a certified ISA or CISA professional in the prescribed format that it has the necessary computing infrastructure.
  8. The entity or its Principal/responsible officers, must not have been convicted for any professional misconduct, fraud, embezzlement or any criminal offence by any court in India or by any professional
